What is a Anarkali?

An anarkali (ਅਨਾਰਕਲੀ) is a floor-length frock suit with a fitted bodice, princess seams, and a flared skirt built from panels called kalis. The classic anarkali has 12 kalis. The heavier bridal cut has 16, 20, or even 32.

Named after the Mughal court legend, the silhouette entered Punjabi wardrobes in the 1950s and never left. It works because it flatters every body — the fit at the bust flows into the sweep at the hem, and the woman inside moves like water.

At TEEYAN we build the anarkali the honest way — kalis cut on the bias so they fall clean, a canvas belt inside the waist so the fit stays sharp, and the flare pressed with an iron before every fitting so it holds its bell.

Common Questions

About the Anarkali

What is an anarkali?

An anarkali is a floor-length one-piece frock suit with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt built from panels called kalis. It is paired with churidar (fitted trousers) or slim salwar and a dupatta.

How many kalis in a good anarkali?

A classic anarkali has 12 kalis (panels). Bridal anarkalis go up to 16, 20, or 32 kalis — more kalis mean a fuller bell and a heavier price. TEEYAN's Peengh is a 16-kali sangeet anarkali. Nili Raat is a slim anarkali cut for the ceremony hour.

What is worn under an anarkali?

Traditionally churidar — long fitted trousers that gather at the ankle. Modern anarkalis are also paired with slim salwar or leggings. The dupatta is draped over one shoulder or across the head for the ceremony.

Can an anarkali be a bridal suit?

Yes. Some Punjabi brides choose an anarkali over a lehenga for the Anand Karaj — it is quieter, easier to sit in during the four Laavan, and moves gracefully. A bridal anarkali is heavily embroidered across the yoke, bodice, and hem.
